Katrina is Cat 5 and heading straight for Louisiana.

[info]bkseiver and [info]phoenixsinger, it's time to stop reading Livejournal and get in the car.

[info]selenite, Pat and I are headed out of dodge, at least as far as Zachary. That is, we are as soon as we get a call back from [info]bkseiver and Dad and get the OK. I am packed and ready to go, and Pat could be in a matter of minutes, I believe.

(Ah, the differences between male and female packing rituals...)

We will get the cats out of here too, of course.

We've done all we can to this point. And we're having a Weather Channel marathon until we get that call.

Securing the house, which is positioned very favorably to be on the West side of a storm - which we are. All models now showing storm path through Pearl River - used to be a nice little town - we had friends there.

Pat and I have made it to Zachary with the cats in tow. (Quite an adventure, that was!) Pat is now helping to secure the house. And, of course, we are all thanking our lucky stars that we don't live in New Orleans.

Worried about our friends there, too...

What was the adventure with the cats?

Cat Adventure

We don't own two cat carriers, so Skipper was in the carrier in the back seat, being fairly quiet while we drove the 20 miles or so. (Or at least we think he was being quiet. You probably just couldn't hear him over Merlin.)

We left Merlin outside a carrier because:
1) We thought he'd handle it better.
2) He's smaller than Skippy, and easier to control if he panics.

He panicked. Big time. We put him in a mesh hamper I had. I held him on my lap in the front passenger seat and held the top of the hamper closed. He sounded like an evacuation siren all the way to Zachary. (Similar also to a submarine siren--"Dive! Dive!" Or an air raid siren. You get the idea.) He tried to get out several times (and succeeded--thankfully before we had gone far, because he did get under Pat's feet.) He climbed my arm and sunk his claws in deep. He shed about a pound of fur and was so upset that he was panting like a dog throughout the journey.

We are definitely borrowing a carrier from Mom and Dad for the return trip. And to think we thought letting Merlin see out would help him...

I didn't know cats could be agorophobic.

Some cats handle cars well. Some totally freak. Now you know which class Merlin falls into.

You *can* put two cats in a carrier, you know, together. We used to do that when we had four cats. We moved them to Texas with two carriers, one medium sized, one large. It does need to be two cats who won't fight the whole way. But in an emergency, better that than them endangering everyone by messing with the driver.

Heh. Reminds me of when I took all four to the vet, Rorik and Karina in the big carrier and Pixel and Pouncequick in the small one. When we finished with the vet I put the carriers on the floor with the doors open. Pounce got into the small one, and all three got into the large one.

All y'all are in my prayers. May the worst of the winds pass by without hurt, and the worst of the rain miss the ones you love.

As I look outside to a cloudless sky, I ache that I cannot help, so I'll just hope and pray.
