QOTD
The folks at the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology worry about whether new tech can be used to destroy the world. I think this may be the soundbite they need to get people's attention:

Moore's Law of Mad Scientists: The minimum IQ required to destroy the world drops by one point every 18 months.

That was a topic at a panel the NASFC con [info]stoutfellow and I attended: Jerry Pournelle, Matt Ruff and mmm... Susan Matthews were on t discussing "will we destroy the world." (Whoever did the program planning went in for highfalutin' in a big way, but I digress.)

The panelists gave it their best shot, but I kept thinking: The question that matters to me is Will we destroy civilization-as-we-know it? That seems far more within human purvew than planet-killing.
