Iron Man Movie
[info]soldiergrrrl posted the link to the Iron Man trailer. I watched it and said, "Okay, I'm in the target demographic for that one." (Note that I've never read an Iron Man comic)

[info]celticdragonfly said "I really didn't follow that."

[info]selenite: "Defense contractor CEO gets kidnapped by bad guys, escapes, and builds himself a supersuit to go fight crime." (Note--going purely by the trailer here)

[info]celticdragonfly: "Yeah, you ARE the target demographic."

Back in the day (70's), I was a Marvel Comics junkie ... and Iron Man was one of the comics I read fairly constantly ... Robert Downy, Jr. absolutely nails Tony Stark ... he's the best casting of a Marvel character since they put Capt. Picard in a wheelchair!

Unfortunately, the film will be somewhat tainted for me by featuring the "Ultimate Universe" re-boot version of Nick Fury. "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." was probably my favorite comic of all time, and that Nick Fury isn't Samuel L. Jackson. It will be interesting to see if there are other clues about the Iron Man movie (and subsequent Nick Fury movie with Jackson) taking place in that alternate universe.

One of my biggest gripes with the X-Men movies was that the time-line (I quit reading comics well before they started doing these alternate universes and story re-boots) was all screwed up (for instance, The Angel was one of the first handful of students working with Prof. X), and I hope they don't ruin these films for me with extreme divergence from the "classic" story contexts.

I hardly ever read Iron Man. But I really really adored him (and the suit). Lots of kids--especially nerdy nonphysical kids--have fantasies of being superheroes. But mine were never Superman or his ilk. My fantasies were always the technogeek supersuit...a la Tony Stark.

Not that this probably comes as a surprise. :-D

Ah, but did you ever catch the 7-minute cartoons in the late 1960s? Boomerang sometimes reruns them in between cartoons. That is, they rerun Aquaman, Flash, & Superman, but have yet to rerun Iron Man or Captain America, which actually have cool theme songs [which may be seen on youtube].
