Time Event
30 Day Book Meme - Day 1
desert_vixen is doing this meme, and I'm inspired to follow along. I should be posting more anyway.

Day 01 – Best book you read last year

I'm going with Warbound by Larry Correia. This is cheating a little since I'm really counting the whole trilogy (Hard Magic, Spellbound, and Warbound) that make up the Grimnoir Chronicles. It's a self-contained fantasy trilogy, which is an impressive rarity by itself these days. It's actually closer to alternate history. In this case the "divergence point" is the appearance of magical abilities among humans in the 19th century. This has had all sorts of effects, including boosting Japan to superpower status thanks to its brutally effective use of talents. The story is set in the 1930s and our heroes are a quiet conspiracy opposing evil magic users. Over the course of the trilogy they find out where magic came from, why that's a problem, and . . . drama.

The source of magic arguably makes this science fiction rather than fantasy, but it's more fun to play with the genre boundaries than fuss over which side to put a book on.

Honorable mention, best non-fiction book: America 3.0: Rebooting American Prosperity in the 21st Century-Why America's Greatest Days Are Yet to Come by James C. Bennett and Michael J. Lotus. Good analysis of the condition the country's in and how to fix it. Takes a very long historical view of what shaped our culture (as in, back to the Saxons invading Britannia). I wrote a review of it when it first came out.
